Changes is a small poetry publisher based in NYC seeking a part-time Editorial and Publicity Assistant to assist in the day-to-day operations of the press and the production of special events. Founded in 2022, Changes is currently a part of the Bergman Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit. Changes is dedicated to published excellence and variousness in poetry, mostly from emerging writers, and to shifting and challenging norms in the small-press publishing industry.

Job Responsibilities

1.  General assistance with the day-to-day operations of a small literary press. 

Production 

o  Helps prepare copy-edited manuscripts for design. 

o  Proofreads book interiors before they are sent to print. 

o  Formats pieces for online publication. 

Publicity

o  Writes copy for public-facing materials like social media posts and distributor catalogs. 

o  Facilitates direct outreach to bookstores. 

o  Manages the production of promotional materials such as postcards and flyers. 

o  Schedules social media posts and email updates to subscribers regarding press news, including book releases, Changes Review releases, and calls for submissions. 

o  Manages award submission program for all Changes titles. 

o  Uses inDesign to compose PR sheets for each new title. 

o  Creates and manages annual subscription program. 

Editorial 

o  Assists in reading for the Changes Book Prize and submissions for full-length manuscripts and the Changes Review. 

o  Helps manage Changes Book Prize reading through the Submittable platform. 

Inventory and Shipping 

o  Keeps record of inventory across distributors and warehouse.

o  Manages shipments of titles and ephemera to customers, reviewers, bookstores, events, warehouses, and distributors.

o  Oversees direct fulfillment platforms and responds to customer queries. 

2.  Staffing and coordinating for special events. 

o  Supports with tabling at bookfairs and conferences as needed.

o  Attends NY-based bookfairs and annual AWP conference. 

o  Assists in coordinating book launch events for Changes Book Prize winners, coordinates author travel, and sells books at events. 

Experience, Skills, and Abilities Required 

We are open to candidates with a broad range of backgrounds and experience levels, but the ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree, some experience working in a literary publishing context, strong attention to detail, good interpersonal skills, and an active and ongoing engagement with contemporary poetry. Must be based in the NYC area.  

Great if you have: 

o  Experience with Wordpress and/or Shopify platforms. 

o  Training in copyediting and/or proofreading. 

o  Experience with Adobe Acrobat, inDesign, and Photoshop. 

o  Knowledge of basic HTML coding.

o  Facility with social media platforms. 

Hours and Compensation

o  $30/hour, 4-8 hours/week
